PCB's used to be used in them. PCB (polychlorinated biphenols) are carcinogenic (cause cancer).
It has become a major hazardous waste disposal problem to get rid of the PCB's, some of which has been dumped into rivers and lakes. That is the ethical question alright. Why did they do it? Because it was cheap and nobody was looking.
